…Ned & Larry ideas that haven’t made it into the comics (yet).
Every now and then, I go digging through my piles of sketchbooks and scraps of paper. Last night, I found an old pencil sketch of Larry, and decided to ink and color him. The poor guy was tucked away in the back, under a pile of notes, and nonsensical ramblings. No wonder he’s bitter…
You can see how much Larry has evolved over the past couple of years. Way back when, his snout (I’ve always thought of his nose as snout-like) had more of a rounded quality.
Sketchbooks & Assorted Scraps of Paper
I always like to have an assortment of sketchbooks (or stray napkins) close by, to write down (or sketch out) the crazy ideas that enter my head. More often than not I use them to sketch Ned & Larry in funny poses and predicaments. At times, those sketches have served as great inspiration for some of my favorite Ned & Larry comics.
Two of my favorites: Coffee Time, and Happy Landings.
Of course for every good idea, there are dozens of bad ones…really dreadful ones, terrible even. The kind of stuff manure is made of. Those ideas get neatly tucked away into a sketchbook, locked away forever…or until I get desperate.
What’s my point?
Never throw out an idea (good or bad); you just never know what it could evolve into.
Thanks for reading Ned & Larry. It’s coffee time, cheers!
Ned & Larry hit a milestone today, surpassing 150,000 hits on their original blog site. Congratulations Ned & Larry and a big thank you to all their readers and fans.
Cheers! -

I just found out about this upcoming event here in Toronto.
“TCAF is The Toronto Comic Arts Festival. It is a week long celebration of comics and graphic novels and their creators, which culminates in a two-day exhibition and vendor fair featuring hundreds of comics creators from around the world. Other Festival events include readings, interviews, panels, workshops, gallery shows, art installations, and much more. TCAF is held at Toronto Reference Library in Toronto, Canada.”
If you’re in Toronto on May 11th or 12th, check out this unique festival of comic art. It sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun!
The TCAF has a fantastic line-up of featured guests booked, including Bill Amend, the cartoonist behind one of my favorite comic strips, Foxtrot.
See you there!
Ned has never looked cuter!
At Cafe Press you’ll find mugs, bags, and t-shirts, featuring one of the world’s happiest goldfish.
